Group Trips & Reservations
Groups are welcome to visit Alcatraz Island throughout the year. However, due to safety concerns and size limitations, groups must make special arrangements for their ticket reservations. "Groups" are defined as 15 people or more.

Special Note: Groups must include one adult leader (over 21 years of age) for every seven youths below the age of 18. Youths must be accompanied by an adult chaperone at all times.

The Night Tour is limited in the number of guests who can take the tour each evening. The National Park Service has restricted the Night Tour to individual guests only. We are not able to book groups on the Night Tour.

Independently guided tours are NOT allowed on Alcatraz Island. Only National Park Service tours are permitted on the island. However, groups are invited to participate in the cellhouse audio tour and the regularly scheduled park programs offered on the island.

The ability to make group reservations requires completing an application. Allow 30 days for review. If approved, you will be authorized to make group reservations. To receive a copy of the application, you must complete our group trip application request .

School Groups
School groups include grades Kindergarten through Grade 12. If you would like to bring a school group of 15 students or more to Alcatraz Island, you must request permission in advance.

Special Note: One adult leader (aged 21 years or older) is required for every seven students.

As dates fill up in advance, please allow as much time as possible for processing your request. Choose at least two alternate date options for your group trip. Dates can be confirmed up to a year in advance. Payment is required within 90 days of the tour date, or your reservation will be cancelled.

To request permission for your School Group trip, please complete the Application Request form (below). Allow 30 days for review. Once we have received this request, an Application Form will be sent to you for completion.

Special Needs Groups
Special Needs groups are defined as a group of 15 or more visitors with mobility impairments or other special access needs visiting the island. If you would like to bring a group with special needs to Alcatraz Island, you must request permission in advance.

Community Groups
Community groups may consist of scouts, bands, church groups, sports teams, or other organized groups. If you would like to bring a community group of 15 people or more to Alcatraz Island, you must request permission in advance.

Special note: Groups must include one adult leader (age 21 or older) for every seven youths below the age of 18.

Senior Groups
Senior Groups are defined as groups whose members are age 62 or older. If you would like to bring a senior group of 15 people or more to Alcatraz Island, you must request permission in advance.

Tour & Travel Operators
If you are a Tour & Travel Operator, the following Travel Group and FIT Policy applies to you.

Travel Group & FIT Policy

  1. All Tour Operators and Wholesalers must apply in advance. Upon receipt of your application request, please allow 30 days to process your application form. Upon written approval you will be able to make ticket requests on-line. Note: If you would like to apply, complete the group trip application request (below). We will reply via e-mail with an Application Form for you to complete based on your application request. You must mail the Application Form back with any required attachments. Example of requirements includes your Tax ID number, IATA, bank name, bank branch, and bank address
  2. Tour Companies must package Alcatraz tickets with other services and clearly disclose Alcatraz ticket prices at their face value. Proof is required in the form of published marketing materials. Proposed tour package is subject to approval.
  3. Ticket Purchase Maximum: (per Tour Company in combination with travel groups and FIT usage): 300 tickets per month, 50 tickets per boat.
  4. Operational details will be included with your Application Form.
