Located just a block from Union Square, Scala's Bistro is adjacent to the historic Sir Francis Drake Hotel.
High ceilings with original elaborate design, richly colored floor tiles, a setting inspired by
Monet's kitchen, and Scala's Old World atmosphere create a comfortable yet elegant ambiance.
An eclectic mix of original murals, rich tobacco tones, gilt mirrors, white linen tablecloths and
a semi-open kitchen produces the look and feel of a classic Parisian bistro.

Wines
Scala's Bistro features more than 150 wines from around the world, including over 80 California treasures. The wide offering of Italian varietals alone represents Umbria, Piemonte, Veneto, and the amazing appellations in between. With 22 wine categories such as "Interesting Whites," "Rhone Whites," "Corvina Blends," and "Nebbiolo & Blends," the flavorful gamut extends from classic favorites to rare finds. You are certain to find a wine to suit your unique taste. Rocche dei Manzoni's '95 Barolo Vigna d'la Roul, for example, is heavy on the smoke and tar, supple and full-bodied, with blackberry and anise. Nobilo's 2003 Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough (available by the half-bottle) is bright, juicy, and tangy with lime and passion fruit flavors.
Cocktails
"If you were to ask me if I ever had the bad luck to miss my daily cocktail, I'd have to say that I doubt it; where certain things are concerned, I plan ahead." - Luis Buñuel
The bar has a distinctly different color scheme than the rest of the restaurant, focusing on a large still life of fruit, which is saturated with rich, vibrant colors in a style reminiscent of Cezanne and Rousseau. The carpet has an intricate floral and geometric pattern. Every afternoon and evening colorful locals and travelers from around the world gather in this favorite neighborhood establishment, to sip cocktails, indulge in Scala's seasonal cuisine and watch as the cable cars rumble by.
The Buzz:
"Scala's Bistro is wonderful," Says Jim Wood of the San Francisco Examiner, "the food is super, the ambience is just about perfect..." The Chronicle's Michael Bauer agrees. "The way the service, food and ambience come together makes it obvious why the restaurant is capturing crowds..."
John Mariani of Esquire Magazine called it "an enveloping space done up in deep hues of gold and brown, with culinary murals, gilt mirrors, pretty Mediterranean tiles, and a fiery open kitchen that gave off the restorative aromas of roast chicken, lamb and pork."
San Francisco CitySearch recommends the atmosphere, too. "Soaring ceilings with elaborate pewter-painted plasterwork, mahogany wainscoting and butter-colored beaded lampshades make for a very convincing reproduction of a Parisian bistro, while hordes of high-end diners make for a near-roaring, feel-good atmosphere. As for the food, CitySearch tells its users, "The expansive menu offers enormous portions of traditional French and Italian fare, expertly prepared with fresh ingredients, entrees shine..."
Fodors.com calls Scala's Bistro "one of downtown's most attractive destinations, while Frommer's declares: "With just the right balance of elegance and informality, it's a perfect place to have some fun (and apparently most people do)."
Scala's Bistro is a true San Francisco original. Come see what locals, tourists, shoppers and theatergoers are all buzzing about and create a little buzz of your own.
